Resurrection Eggs

This is a post from Easter, 2 years ago.  My kids have enjoyed this tradition so much, that I just had to repost it in case any of you wanted to make Resurrection Eggs for your kids.  If you follow our tradition of reading from one egg every night for 12 nights, you will need to open the first egg on Wednesday, March 20 and the final egg on Easter Sunday.

(Originally posted April 16, 2011)

When I was a kid I lived for Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny.  I love the thrill of the surprise (even though I often searched for my presents hidden in my parents’ bedroom), and I love the mystery and excitement.  However, now that I have kids, I want them to understand that these holidays are about so much more than Santa and a silly bunny.  Not that my parents didn’t teach us the real meanings of these holidays, but my focus was just never right as a child.

This Christmas, Preston and Lilly Katherine followed the lead of my sweet nephew, Caleb, and they learned a good part of Luke 2.  It was so sweet to see the verses and the story of Christ’s birth come alive to them.

A few weeks ago I decided I wanted to find another passage for them to memorize for Easter, but I couldn’t find a passage.  The Easter story is more spread out and it would be hard for them to memorize several chapters (not that they couldn’t do it…) :)

My Google search resulted in something I had not heard of, although I’m sure many of you have…Resurrection Eggs.  This seemed like the perfect visual for my children to memorize the details of Christ’s Crucifixion and Resurrection.  It’s not a fun, Easter Bunny story.  In fact, it’s sad and horrible, but it has a happy ending, and it’s so important for my children to learn and know the REAL meaning of what we are really celebrating on Easter.

You can purchase Resurrection Eggs online, but I wanted to make them myself.  I got ideas from a few different people, then I chose all the verses I wanted to teach my maniacs.  I used different symbols than many of the eggs I saw, plus I have listed 3 additional symbols that you could use.  (Use as many as you want.  You don’t have to be limited to 12, but I wanted our eggs to store neatly in my egg carton, so I chose 12.  I’m weird like that.)

I have also created a printable PDF of the list of eggs and a PDF of the verses, so you can cut and put them in your eggs.  Please feel free to use these to teach your family about Christ. (PDFs at bottom of post)

We started opening eggs 12 days before Easter, and we will open one every night.  On Easter we will open the empty egg, to symbolize that Jesus has risen, and the tomb was empty.  Preston reads the verses for us and then we talk about what each one means.  I have heard other people that open all of them and let their kids try to put them in order.  Just use this as a tool…there are no rules.  Once you make it, you can use it year after year.

A few little tips:

Day 1: Palm branch.  I just cut up an old fake ivy leaf that I had around the house.  Not sure why I have fake ivy as a decoration, but if you do, cut it up for your palm branch.

Day 2: Perfume.  If you have a small bottle of perfume, use it.  If you don’t, steal one from a friend, like I did. (Thanks, Dominique).  Or, you can just put some perfume on a cotton ball.

Day 3: Towel.  Use a small baby’s washcloth, or I just cut a piece from an old towel.

Day 4: Little piece of bread.  Some people use a piece of chex cereal, but we always have bread.  Once you put it in the egg, it gets hard quickly…it doesn’t mold.

Day 5: 3 dimes because Judas was paid 30 silver coins when he betrayed Jesus.  Sword can be made with cardboard and foil, or you can borrow one from an action figure.

Day 6: Crown of thorns.  I used a rose branch and twisted it into a circle.  (Again, thanks Dominique)

Day 7: Dice (crazy, but I didn’t have any) and for the clothes I just cut a little robe out of a piece of material.

Day 8: Cross and nails.  I just used 2 little sticks and bound them together with thread/floss.

Day 9: Sponge with a little vinegar.  I soaked it in vinegar and then squeezed it out.  The smell remains, but your sponge doesn’t stay wet.

Day 10: Spices.  Use whatever whole spices you have.  Cloves, Cinnamon sticks…

Day 11: Rock.  Any small pebble will work…even one from a fake flower arrangement.  This has taught me I need some decorations that aren’t fake greenery!

Eggstravaganza!

We had our annual church Easter Egg Hunt and Potluck Lunch this past weekend…always a fav for my fam!  It was so much fun!  My sister and I decided to stick around and take a few family pics after the festivities were over.

What do you get when you have 7 tired children who have been at church for 5 hours all dressed in their Sunday best- running around sweating and hunting Easter Eggs and playing with their friends and eating Easter candy? (besides a run-on sentence?)

You get pictures that look like this…

and this…

and this…

and this…my goodness, this was the only smile AnnaLeigh would give me.  It’s FRIGHTENING!  She’s in that lovely awkward stage of trying to find her “picture” smile.  We haven’t mastered it yet.

Of course, I sat my sister’s kids down and told them to smile.  I took 3 pics.  They were all perfect!

Here are the pictures from our day.

AnnaLeigh just picked up all the eggs that were falling out of the bigger kids’ baskets.

Lilly Katherine was so thrilled that she had a shiny egg.  With a smile on her face, she kindly donated an egg or two to children that didn’t have many.

Preston had a strategy on how to get the most eggs.  He ran to the back and worked his way forward instead of starting where everyone else was.  My little analytical planner.  I love this type-A kid!

While these 2 were busy taking inventory…

These 3 maniacs were messing with a caterpillar.

Sidenote:  I literally hate worms of any kind more than anything!  I cannot look at these pictures because it makes me GAG!  The picture above and below I had to post without really looking at them because it makes me have the heebie-jeebies!  I HATE worms.  Oh, I just got a full body shiver just typing that!  AGH!  These pics gross me out!

Sidenote #2:  My children think these things are called cal-a-pillas.  They also all three say cim-a-non, which has nothing to do with this post, but I love little words like that and I don’t correct them.  I will one day.  Not today.

Here’s my handsome hubby!

I feel like he should have a “Senior 2012” stamped in gold at the bottom of this picture.  Except it would say “Senior ’96!!!”

And this is the best family pic we got.  No lie!

Ok, well there’s this one, but let me point out a few things…

Brad has a pacifier on his finger.

LK is holding an egg, which she informed me today she did that on purpose so we would know this picture was from Easter.

AnnaLeigh is looking sassy as usual with her hands on her hips.

Georgia is screaming.

My face is round like Kelly Kapowski’s in the later days of Saved by the Bell.  You know what I’m talking about!

Moving on.

My skinny sister and our baby girls…

My maniacs…

The whole crew…

My beautiful blue-eyed baby girl!

Have a wonderful Easter and remember that Easter is not about a silly bunny and bunch of candy stuffed plastic eggs, or even about getting cute pics of your maniacs.  Easter is a time to remember and reflect on the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.  He suffered the ultimate price for me, for Brad, for Preston, for Lilly Katherine, for AnnaLeigh, for Georgia, and for YOU!  Know the truth about Easter.  Know that our LORD did not just die, but he ROSE!  He is alive and he wants you to know him!  Learn more about the true meaning of Easter here.

Easter Ideas

I simply cannot believe that Easter is only 2 weeks away!  I should have posted this sooner, but you still have time to get your Resurrection Eggs together.  If you’re like me, you will wait until Tuesday night to do it anyway. :)

Last year I made Resurrection Eggs for my kids.

They are a wonderful visual tool to help with the true Easter story.  Click here for complete instructions and pictures as well as PDFs of the verses (found at the bottom of the post) on how to make Resurrection Eggs.  We open an egg a day for 12 days leading up to Easter.  We will open our first egg this coming Wednesday night, so get busy making eggs!

.

We also enjoyed making Resurrection Rolls last year.  I did not take pics, but my friend Mandy posted the recipe with pics here.

.

I am hoping to make these Holy Week Cookies this year.  A bit more ambitious than the rolls above, so we will see.  I am taking it one day at a time!

.

Enjoy the beautiful spring weekend!

Easter Weekend…part 1

We had a wonderful weekend celebrating the Resurrection of our Lord!  We celebrated by spending lots of time with our family!  What a blessing they are!

Friday night we had our annual Easter egg dying party at my brother-in-law’s parents’ house.  We’ve done this for years, and the kids love it!  Nancy boils DOZENS of eggs and lets the kids decorate them.  We let the kids explain the Resurrection Eggs, and it was so special to see how much the kids learned and remembered.  I was blown away by how much sweet AnnaLeigh had learned.  She is two years old, and that just proves to me that little ears are always listening even when you think they aren’t.  The Bible promises us in Isaiah 55 that the Word of the Lord does not return void, so your babies are NEVER too young to hear about our Lord and Savior!

I wish I had pictures from Friday night, but I didn’t have my camera.  I have one blurry pic from my phone, but that’s it. :(  Oh well, there’s always next year…I hope…right Bob and Nancy?!?  (Thank you so much for your continued generosity to us and our maniacs!)

.

Saturday was kind of a rough day.  Brad was working and for some reason our house was meltdown central.  I tried to hold it together, but by the time Brad walked in the door I was ready to quit.  He ran to change clothes, and I tried to shuffle fussy kids into the car.  We were very late meeting my parents for a “fun” evening, and just then the STINKIN’ (I’ll use that word instead of the word I would like to use) DOG got out.  He’s such a pain…a cute pain, but a pain!

My attitude was BAD.  Preston’s attitude was bad.  Lilly Katherine had hit some kind of horrible sleep-deprived wall, and she was freaking out because Sam was running away.  Brad was exhausted from working all day.  AnnaLeigh was antagonizing LK, because that’s her most favorite thing to do these days.

I told the kids that we were all going to have an attitude change, starting with me.  As Brad drove out of the driveway, I said we’re going to pray for a renewed spirit and positive outlook, and we were going to pray for a fresh start.  About the time I bowed to pray, the maniac dog started chasing the car.  We had to drive around the block as he ran beside us barking, but we finally got him in the house.  At that point we were almost an hour late. (No surprise to anyone who knows us)

I got back in the car.  I prayed.  I know that I personally felt better.  I decided I was going to have a good time.  Sometimes I literally have to tell myself that, but whatever works for me to have a positive attitude…right, dear hubby?

We pulled up to our beautiful church for family fishing and a picnic.  My mom, dad, sister, Alan, Caleb, and Truett were already down at the dock, with picnic tables out, fishing poles lowered, and fish being caught right and left.  All the sudden the day turned around.  We had a wonderful time!  The weather was absolutely amazing.  The breeze was refreshing.  The fish were biting.  The crew was happy!  I was happy! :)  Thank you, Lord, for my family!  Thank you for sweet, fun family times!

This is my sweet, intense, first born son.  He’s so extremely tense that even fishing isn’t relaxing to the poor kid.

But my big bug caught a fish, and that made him very happy!  Plus, it was the biggest fish caught since we had been there, and that made him even happier.  He is just a little competitive.

Then there’s this one.  They could not be more opposite?  She was just “sittin’ on the dock of the bay, watchin’ the tide roll away.”  She’s not bothered by much, thank the LORD!

She and Uncle Alan caught a big one.

AnnaLeigh had fun fishing, too.  She was fishing with Mimi.

She was so proud of her little fishy.

“Hey lil fishy.  How uh you?”

Caleb and Alan on their professional rod and reel.

Truett and Papa.

And…my father.  His lips are a little too close to those fish lips if you ask me!

Here’s a good idea of how things work around here.  AnnaLeigh is 5 weeks older than Truett.  They LOVE each other.  They embrace every time they see each other as if they’ve been apart for weeks. It’s precious and sweet, but lasts only a few seconds.  See below to find out why.

Truett is fishing.  He’s doing just fine by himself.  Along comes AnnaLeigh.

“What you doin, too-it?”  (As she totally invades his personal space)

“Hey, yet me hewp you, too-it.”  (As she smiles knowing exactly what she’s doing.  He’s still thinking she’s just there to be sweet.)

Then he realizes her little scheme.  She cackles as she tries to steal the pole.  Truett is most upset…as anyone would be.

As I’ve said before, she’s small and mighty!  This girl is a little fireball, and she is funny while she’s feisty.  Oh, heaven help me!

My mother, she kind of likes this little fireball.  AnnaLeigh kind of likes her, too.

My mother must love her if she’s going to let AnnaLeigh put dirty little fishy fingers on her mouth.

“Dat you nose?  You need to blow you nose, Mimi?”

Before we left our little fishing hole, Preston made one last catch.  He kept saying, “I think I’m getting something!  Just wait one more minute.”  Well, he got something.  He caught a little turtle.  It was the perfect way to end our perfect fishing trip.

My baby boy was so excited!  He hasn’t stopped talking about his big catch!  He was “the only one who caught a turtle, you know.  It was the bigger than the fish, too.”  (As I said, just a little competitive…but I’m thankful he is!)

Thank you, Mama and Diddy!  We had a wonderful time!

.

Thank you, Lord, for all the creatures that swam below us, all the birds that flew above us, for the breeze that blew by us, and your Love that surrounds us.  Thank you for thinking of so many amazing details!  Thank you for a blessed family time!

.

Many more Easter pics to come.

Dip, Baby Dip…

I have been addicted to making different dips lately…hummus (every flavor I can come up with), hot sauce/salsa/picante (depending on where you live), and now salad dressing.  I’m going to try to squeeze 4 recipes on this post.

.

I have learned that the more fun food is, the more likely the maniacs are to eat it.  I bought these cool salad shells that the kids could eat, and suddenly a salad was much more appealing to them!  I also let them choose exactly what they wanted on their salad.  We had several options like taco meat, chicken, kidney beans, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, avocados, cheese, olives, onions, jalapenos, and more.  They ate every bite…and the bowl!

I made a yummy dressing to go on top, but I accidentally made it too spicy for the kids.  Brad and I loved it, and we ate it all week on chips and veggies.

It doesn’t have a name…

Green and Good Salad Dressing

Cilantro, Lime, Jalapeno Salad Dressing

Jalapeno Salad Dressing

Spicy Cilantro Salad Dressing! (I don’t know!  I think I’m delirious, so that sounds fine for now)

Complete recipe below.

Roughly chop the following…

1 Jalapeno

2 Cloves of Garlic (or more if you dare)

Half of a large Avocado

Large Handful of Cilantro

Squeeze the juice from one Lime

Put all ingredients in a food processor.  Add a small container of Sour Cream (8 oz).  Add Salt and Cumin.

Blend until smooth.

It tastes better than it looks.  This picture is pretty pitiful.  I could have at least tossed a cilantro leaf in for decoration…or put the bowl on a table that’s not scratched.  I was in a hurry.  :)  Give it a try.  It really is delicious!

Spicy Cilantro Salad Dressing Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 Jalapeno
  • 2 cloves of Garlic
  • 1/2 of a Large Avocado
  • Large handful of Cilantro (about a cup)
  • Juice from one Lime
  • 1 Carton (8 oz) Sour Cream
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1/2 tsp Salt

Roughly chop the Jalapeno, Garlic, Avocado, and Cilantro.  Combine all ingredients in a food processor.  Blend until smooth.  Eat with raw veggies, chips, on a salad, or just drink it.

.

Hot Sauce…Picante Sauce…Salsa…whatever you want to call it!

This is Kellie’s recipe…basically.  Because I’m ME, I had to change it up just a bit.  Kellie, Mere, Tiffany, and I get together about once a week for girl time.  We always have hot sauce, hummus, and chocolate.  Might not sound good, but it is YUMMY!

Hot Sauce

Because I was in a hurry, there are no step by step pictures.  However, I know you’re smart enough to do it without the pics. :)

Ingredients:

  • 2 Cans Diced Tomatoes, drained well (I even squeeze a little juice out or the hot sauce will be runny)  You can use one can of Rotel and one can of Diced Tomatoes, or 2 cans of Diced Tomatoes.
  • 1 Jalapeno
  • Juice from one Lime
  • 2 Cloves Garlic
  • 1/2 to 1 Cup Cilantro
  • 1/4 of an Onion (about 1/4 Cup)
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Cumin

Roughly chop onion, garlic and jalapeno.  Place all ingredients in a food processor.  Pulse to desired consistency.  Add salt if needed.

Variation:  Meredith likes her onions diced, so she pulses all ingredients except the onions and then adds large diced onions to the salsa to give it flavor.

.

Jalapeno Cilantro Hummus

I basically made the same recipe as the Caramelized Onion Hummus, except I added Cilantro, Lime, and Jalapeno instead of Onions.

Jalapeno Cilantro Hummus Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 Can Garbanzo Beans, drained (reserve liquid)
  • 1-2 Cloves Garlic
  • 2-3 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp Reserved Garbanzo Bean Liquid
  • 1 Jalapeno, roughly chopped
  • 1/4 Cup Cilantro
  • Juice from one Lime
  • 1 scant tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Cumin

Place all ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth.  Stopping to scrape down sides.  May need to add additional olive oil to reach desired consistency.

.

Kalamata and Feta Hummus

Same basic steps.  As you can tell, I just make the basic hummus recipe and toss random things from my fridge in it.  It’s always good! :)  This recipe was inspired by a hummus I had at FRESH (our new grocery store).

Kalamata Olive and Feta Hummus Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 Can Garbanzo Beans, drained (reserve liquid)
  • 1-2 Cloves Garlic
  • 2-3 Tbsp Olive Oil
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp reserved Garbanzo Bean Liquid
  • 1/4 tsp salt*
  • 1/2 Cup Garlic and Herb Feta Cheese
  • about 12 Kalamata Olives

Place first 5 ingredients in a food processor and blend until smooth.  Stopping to scrape down sides.  May need to add additional olive oil to reach desired consistency.  Add the Olives and Feta and pulse a few times.  I wanted my olives and feta to be a little chunkier than the hummus.  If you want a smoother consistency, blend them together from the beginning.

*The olives and the feta are salty, so use salt with caution on this hummus.  However, because of the saltiness of it, it tastes WONDERFUL on fresh veggies!

We ate almost every bite of those veggies and hummus.  My new fav raw veggie is ASPARAGUS! (thank you for introducing me to raw asparagus, Heather!)  It’s so delicious and great with hummus!

“Yummy!  You make me hummus, mama?!?”

My kids love hummus!  I love that they love it!  AnnaLeigh gets so excited when she sees me making it, and she couldn’t wait to dig in to this one!  So stinkin’ cute!

.

On another note…Easter is tomorrow.  This should probably be a separate post and not part of the post titled “Dip, Baby Dip,” but I think it’s important to share and I know I won’t have time to write another post later.

Easter is a day to celebrate the RISEN LORD!  Christ died on the cross for our sins, so that we could have eternal life.  He paid the ultimate price.  He gave his life…but He, being the son of God, rose from the dead.  I know the Lord loves me.  He loves my maniacs, and He loves YOU!  He wants to have a relationship with all of us, and if you don’t know the story of Christ, I encourage you this weekend to find out who He is and why we celebrate Easter.  (I’ll give you a hint…it has NOTHING to do with a bunny that brings eggs.)

I know that Christ rose from the dead, and I plan on doing one or both of these activities with my maniacs this afternoon.  It’s just a fun way to illustrate that He is Risen!

My friend, Mandy, posted this fun and easy Easter Rolls recipe.

or I may try these Holy Week Cookies from a blogger that I don’t know, but I know I would love.  :)

Also, if you haven’t made Resurrection Eggs, it’s never too late.

.

Have a peaceful Easter weekend focusing on the risen Lord!

5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said.   -Matthew 28:5-6
